I turned on the TV on Sunday evening after a long rewarding afternoon and what do I see? Another terrorist attack!!! This time around, Cote D’ivoire was the target. In Grand Bassam to be precise which is about 40 km away from Abidjan. This bothers me as I’m planning a trip to Abidjan soon and the first question that comes to my mind is, “Should I cancel my trip?”

Some might say this attack shouldn’t bother me that much but I can’t help it that I’m worried. Not just because I’m planning a trip there soon but because of the recurrence of these attacks. The series of attacks that have happened in the last couple of months is enough to get one thinking and I can’t stop asking “Why?”. The first was on November 20 2015 at Radisson Blu in Bamako, Mali where 20 people where killed. Second was on the 15th and 16th of January 2016 at Splendid hotel, Yibi hotel and Cappucino Restaurant all in Ouagadougou claiming 30 lives and now three resorts and the beach in Grand Bassam with 18 people dead. As I ponder on them, I have Nigeria at the back of my mind as well. We’ve also battled with Boko Haram for some years now. From the kidnapping of the Chibok girls(who are yet to be rescued) to other several bombings and mass shooting in some states in Northern Nigeria, Still I can’t help but wonder why West Africa is being targeted?

I’ve noticed some trends with these 3 recent attacks which is a bit awkward. They are all about 2 months apart, occurred sometime in the middle of the month, the countries are all Francophone and they seem to be targeting hotels and other public areas where they are supposedly a large number of westerners. For what it is worth, West Africa probably have the least tourism potential in the world as we are being tagged as poor and underdeveloped so why tarnish the image even more with all these attacks? Why damage the tourism potential the region has with all these attacks? Was Ebola not enough?

Considering all these trends is it safe to say we should expect another attack in May? Should people stop traveling to these countries due to these attacks? So many questions running through my mind but I’ll end it here.

As for me, I won’t stop myself from having the urge to explore some of these places regardless of the attacks. So help me GOD!
